Toyota replaced by Honda to become suppliers’ favored customer

In accordance to an annual survey of relations amid vehicle producers and suppliers Toyota is no more a darling of North American car parts makers. A survey by Michigan based Planning Perspectives recommends that Toyota and Honda are putting nearly as much pressure on suppliers to lower prices as are the three Detroit carmakers. In survey’ history it’s the first time that Toyota has lost its spot as suppliers most favored consumer which is to be replaced by Honda. Chrysler, whose procurement section has been in turmoil as its conquest by Cerberus Capital in 2007, got the least score among the six big manufacturers.

Chrysler, which filed for Chapter 11 insolvency protection last month, has offered details to about 1,200 suppliers on how their outstanding bills will be settled. It plans to transfer the “awesome majority” of its supplier contracts to a novel company expected to come out from bankruptcy protection at the end of this week.

Relations in the industry have been strained by the droop in vehicle sales. Dozens of suppliers have filed for bankruptcy, including two sizeable ones – Mark IV Industries and Hayes-Lemmerz – in previous month.

Parts makers’ opinion of Toyota has turned down for two years in a row. John Henke, Planning Perspectives’ president, stated that the slump had exposed weaknesses stemming from the Japanese car producer’s quick expansion.Toyota took over General Motors last year as the world’s main and largest car manufacturer but reported a larger first-quarter loss than GM.
Mr.Henke stated that lot of suppliers reported dealing with younger employees who had little exposure to Toyota’s “incessant improvement” culture.

REPORT: NASCAR seen fretting over ratings drop

According to Nielsen, ratings for NASCAR on Fox are down by an alarming 11.5% so far this year, and while we're sure that many NASCAR haters will suggest that it's just not that interesting watching non-stock "stock cars" turning left over and over again as they circle oval tracks, race organizers and TV ratings researchers believe there's much more to the decline in viewership than that.

Certainly, the sorry state of affairs surrounding the world's sagging economy doesn't help matters any, and neither did the rain that forced an early end to the Daytona 500, the sport's pivotal first race of the season. Paul Brooks, president of NASCAR Media Group, also points a finger in the direction of Dale Earnhardt Jr, who's second season as part of Hendrick Motorsports isn't exactly going as hoped.

Regardless of its downward ratings trend in '09, it seems most experts on the subject predict the NASCAR brand will pull through over the long haul, although it will be interesting to see if/how the auto industry crisis affects the cash-intensive motorsports series. In the meantime, NASCAR and Fox are reportedly "looking at every angle" to boost viewership in the short term.

Transmissions are Important for Improving Fuel Economy, Too

With news last week of the four-cylinder 2010 Chevrolet Equinox achieving 32 mpg highway in EPA testing - best-in-class for a compact crossover vehicle and 2 mpg better than we expected - I started to reflect a little on all the powertrain systems and technologies that must work together to reach such an impressive number, especially when you consider the Equinox seats 5-passengers comfortably and weighs close to 4,000 lbs. Being a transmissions engineer, I naturally gravitated to the vehicle’s six-speed automatic transmission.

When people talk about fuel economy, they generally focus more on the fuel savings from the engine than anything else. And true, technologies like active fuel management, turbocharging or in the case of the Chevy Equinox, direct injection help to greatly improve a vehicle’s fuel economy.

But what about the part of the powertrain that gets the power to the road - the transmission? Improving fuel efficiency is key to GM’s current and future product plans, and from a transmission standpoint, we are working on a number of technology options to achieve that goal.
One of the most recent advances for our transmission portfolio is the large scale availability of six-speed automatic transmissions across a wide range of GM cars and trucks. Six-speed automatics are available in GM vehicles from small cars to SUVs and pick-up trucks.

In six short years, we’ve developed and launched nine new six-speed automatics for more than 40 rear-wheel, front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles. And by the end of the year, we will launch another six-speed variant for a total of 10 new six-speed automatics!

Auto Laptop Mounts

When you notice yourself on the road a lot with your laptop, you may find that it gets pretty annoying to lay your laptop on the passenger seat frequently. Well, did you recognize that created some mounts out there that can hook up to your car, so that you can hook it straight to the dash? This indicates no more laying it down, using it on your lap, etc.

It’s a lot easier to spend into one of these tools, particularly if you’re going to use it a lot in the long haul. Take a look at a few auto laptop mounts that you should check out if you find yourself using the laptop a lot in the car.

Car Seat Desk – Auto Exec Mobile Station:

If you don’t want getting out the tools, and installing a new mount on your car, the mobile work station may be your most excellent choice. It doesn’t essentially mount into your car, but instead fits on your lap alongside your seat belt. It weighs just about 6 pounds, and can cling to a laptop, planner, cell phone, and more.

Adjustable Laptop Tray Vehicle Mount:

This mount is going to be one that you’re heading for installing yourself. It will come up with an adjustable tray vehicle mount, along with a adjustable angle. This permits you to maneuver the laptop as you utilize it.

Customized Mount for your car:

Since each and every car are different when it comes to the interior, there are actually a lot of mounts build for your brand of car. From a Ford to a Honda, your make and model probably will be on the list. These mounts hold a 100% lifetime guarantee and are removable, and need no drills.

If you’re seeking a great way to use your laptop while parked, I would highly suggest you look into these options. You’ll hoard yourself a lot of time and effort when trying to put it on your lap. So, its better rather than being uncomfortable, try an alternative like this.

BMW Project i will include a two, three and four wheel version

BMW is busy developing their Project i electric vehicle. The Bavarian automaker has teamed up with Britain’s Bath University in order to produce the world’s first "decent electric city car." What they have come up with is a compact EV that will be offered in three different versions: equipped with two, three or four wheels.

A spokesman from the German automaker was quoted as saying, "there are a number of options under consideration and we are exploring different avenues. One of the proposals is something like the Clever Concept. This would deliver the thrills of a motorcycle but, being a three wheeler, you wouldn’t have to wear a helmet to drive one."

BMW plans for the Project i to be an economical zero emission vehicle thanks in part to the batteries that have been providing juice to the Mini E.

Green GT LeMans Concept

Have you ever wondered what a green GT racecar would look like, how would it sound and what would it smell like? Well we can help you with the first, thanks to Switzerland’s own GreenGT, one of the most revolutionary eco-conscious carmakers on the planet.

These images are of their first design study and represent what the racecar builder intends to enter in the 2011 24 Hours of LeMans. The best part is that in order to homologate the two intended models for competition, GreenGT will have to build 22 examples for the street. Take that Tesla, this will be a zero emissions all electric super car.

The GreenGT will be able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and capable of a top speed around 170 MPH. The electric engines will develop an initial 1475 lb-ft of torque until the vehicle reaches 100 MPH, and then decreasing to 590 lb-ft after that.

Keep Your Teen Driver Safe This Summer

Its time for all parents to give perfect guidelines to their Teens for safe driving and they also should see to that that they follow all the guidelines carefully. Since the school year winds down its better to give them perfect guidelines before they hit the road this summer!

And many studies also revealed that car accidents are the foremost cause for death of teens! According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in the year 2005, 4,544 teenagers aging amid 16-19expired due to injuries caused by car crashes.

Well parents can very well help their kids who are of teenage by giving them following guideline:

  • Tell your teen to always wear a seat belt while in drive.

  • Tell them not drive when they are impaired by drugs/alcohol.

  • Keep a time for our teen drive so that they spend limited time on driving mainly instruct them not to drive at night time which quite dangerous/risky.

  • They are not supposed to use cell phones, not even messaging, nor meddling with MP3 players/cd when the car is on move.

  • There should be limited number of persons to be seated in the car when your teen is on drive.

  • Its always recommended to use driving contract in order to outline your family’ rules of the road.

  • Its better to have a code word so that you teen can call you up/text and inform you when she uncomfortable with anyone in car or when something is wrong.

  • Make your teen to sign up for safe-driving program that’s specially targeted for teens which comprises something like Driver’s Edge, Toyota Driving Expectations and Tire Rack Street Survival.

Evolution of Car Logos

Often I get a doubt when I get stuck in traffic! In front of me there stands a BMW, Cadillac I get a doubt regarding the origination of their LOGO and all other stuffs related with their LOGO! Well this blog post will be quite useful for people who get such a doubt like me. This post gives a clear view and information about a range of cars in the auto industry.

Mitsubishi Logo History

Mitsubishi Automotive Company is known for its production of large cars with high power engine and this company dates back to 1870s. This company earned huge amount of profits right from the starting and it also has a very stylish logo which is like three diamonds in red color.
Well there weren’t many changes in the logo. There was only change in the caption and the full name like for some period it was Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Electric and then just Mitsubishi and finally it designed the logo with the name Mitsubishi Corporation which connotes the entire company.

Benz:

There are few talks which tell that the history of Benz Car dates back to 1880s but the modern Benz traced its lineage to a 1926 which is merger of two companies Daimler-Motored-Gesellschaft or DMG (founded by Gottlieb Daimler), and Benz & Cie (founded by Karl Benz). The name Mercedes came in 1900 and Mercedes Benz logo had just slight variations over subsequent years.

Skoda

1926 - 1933
This company has been founded in the year 1895. In Mladá Boleslav cars have been manufactured under the brand Skoda and though the name brand has been completely changed in form of novel product logo is visible continuity with previous stage and the logo of this company has a novel which is of oval shape where the brand name is yet a dominant one in the center bounded laurels.

1926 - 1990
The first logo of became so popular which is of which is of winged arrow and this particular one has already been used earlier in 1926.Below is a clear view of logos of Skoda company with clear description behind the design!

Fiat

Fiat is one of the famous car company which was set up in the year 1899 by a group of investors. Fiat means Fabbrica Italiana Torino which means Italian Automobile Factory of Turin and Giovanni Agnelli was one of the prospective investor of that company and later became its Managing Director. The first Logo was designed by the Company’ Chief Designer. Currently this company is producing cars with attractive styling and exciting engines and also the cars which enhance the quality of everyday life!

Renault

There are many talks on this company regarding the year of set-up of this company. Few say that this company was initially set up in the year 1899 but it started manufacturing cars from 1897. Well Louis Renault made his first car at the age of 21 and soon got many orders for cars in the year 1898 and this made him to open his own company by name Société Renault Frères in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.

In the year 1900 the first Renault Logo was drawn by him. This logo features three initials of Renault Brothers Louis, Ferdinand and Marcel and in year 1906 Logo got changed to a front end of a car enclosed in a gear wheel.

Audi

Initially let me note that this company was found by August Horch and the name Audi was basically suggested by Franz Fikentscher’s son where Franz was a business partner. Initially August Horch used to work for Karl Benz and then he founded his own company in year 1899 by name A. Horch & Cie and later he was forced to be out of his own company and well he set up another company by name Horch but since his former partners sued him he was forced to look for some other new name and finally got its name Audi which was named by his partners son. Well there were many logos designed for this company and finally the current logo has been designed by them which is quite a trendy one!

Cadillac

The second Automobile Company was set up by the Ford Motors by name Henry Ford Company was in a position of liquidation but an engineer by name Henry M. Leland told them to continue the business and hence this business was continued and this formed Cadillac Company. In simple words Cadillac Company came into existence from Henry Ford Company. This company was founded in the year 1902.

When we look at the story of Logo, first Logo was designed based on family crest of a minor aristocrat that the company was named after Antoine de La Mothe, Seigneur de Cadillac. Well there were many variations in the logo of this company from 1916-2002 and this company earned good returns over subsequent years.

Opel:

Opel Cars history dates back to 1902 and Opel commenced the manufacture of cars with high powered engine and attractive models in a slow and steady way. Opel was a leading European Car producer vending small versions in large numbers and the logo of this company varies from one year to another year. There was a drastic change year by year in models of cars and engines manufactured by Opel and below are the pictures of Logo of Opel which clearly shows variations from one year to another.

Ford

Ford Motors was found in the year 1903 by Henry Ford and this company is the third auto company. The other two companies by name The Detroit Automobile Company and Henry Ford Company didn’t run out well in the market and he finally in a slow motion earned good returns in this third company.

And the first Logo of Ford Motors was created by Childe Harold Wills, chief engineer and designer of Ford. The famous oval in blue got added up for 1927 model A which remained in use until today.

Buick:

Buick is quite a famous company which came into existence in the year 1903 by a Scottish American inventor by name David Dunbar Buick. And Buick is the person who founded a company which slowly and steadily became world’s largest automotive company, General Motors.

Buick dropped out from school at the age of 15 and he started working for a plumbing fixture manufacturer and that company was taken over by him and his friend due to the plunge of the company. Later he faced many problems in life where he suffered many days penniless and finally came to a good position. When we come to the story of Logo there were many variations to be found from the year 1937-2002 because of various reasons. Below are pictures of Buick Logo.

Toyota

As we all know Toyota is one of the companies which is successful in many ways and has a lot of milestones in its history. This company as founded in the year 1907. When we come to the Logo, earlier it had a traditional logo which was not that attractive in color and later it designed its logo with its name alone and then with a design excluding the name of the company and finally it designed a very stylish logo combining the design in grey color and the name in red color

Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo is a car company which commenced its business in the year 1910 and initially Milan aristocrat Cavaliere Ugo Stella entered into a partnership with a French company Darracq and when this partnership didn’t work Cavaliere shifted the company and renamed it as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Lombard Automobile Factory, Public company) which is also known as A.L.F.A.

The logo of this company has been created in the year 1910 in a unique way by draftsman name Romano Cattaneo. Reason behind the selection of Alfa name is basically taken by seeing the Milan Flag. He completely got inspired and he liked the way two dynasty knots lacerated the words ALFA and MILANO.

The other part i.e. the Romeo part came in the year 1916. It was exactly when Neapolitan businessman Nicola Romeo took over the company and this company got converted its factories to manufacture munitions and machineries for World War I. After the completion of War the company went back to manufacturing of cars and earned good profits by manufacturing sporty and trendy cars in the market!

Aston Martin

This company started in the year 1913 by Lionel Martin & Robert Bamford. Though Martin & Bamford Limited manufactured singers racing cars they desired to produce more sophisticated model of their own and finally they did as planned and named their first car as Aston cars because Lionel Martin and the Aston Clinton hill climb racing course where their Singers car that backed prize! Well gradually this car company has also got more output in the auto industry and has good logo!

BMW:

BMW began its life in 1990s. Initially it was completely dealing with aircraft factories. In the year 1913 there were two separate air crafts founded by two different people Karl Friedrich Rapp and Gustav Otto and later these two merged and formed as BMW which is known as Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. These two people had just little bit of work to do with car manufacturing but there were three persons by name who played pretty big role in designing BMW a modern manufacturer of cars.

BMW logo looks quite catchy one. When we look at the history of this logo the circle is known for spinning propeller of a Bavarian Luftwaffe and the reason behind the white and blue color is aircrafts were painted with regional colors and the color of Bavarian Luftwaffe were white and blue and its also said that the pilot saw the propeller as changing segments of white and blue! The roundel is a nod to Karl original company.

Citroen

This Automotive Company was founded by Andre Citroen in 1919 and he led his life as an engineer many years in the automotive industry manufacturing gears and at the time of wars he produced munitions. This company launched its first car Type A in the year 1919 in which a sv 1327 engine was incorporated. Subsequently Type b and Type c cars were unveiled. Well slowly it started producing more number of cars and earned higher returns. The logo of this company had slight variations among various years. But it name never changed in the Logo it remained standard all the time.

Mazda:

Mazda Company started its company in Hiroshima at Japan in the year 1920. This company was stated as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. In 1927 Jujiro Matsuda came and this company started manufacturing tools, three-wheeled trucks and later came to cars. The company adopted the name Mazda after World War II and in the year 1936 logo the M shaped curve was inspired by the emblem of Hiroshima city.

When we come to the logo of this company, in 1936 logo the M shaped curve got inspired by the emblem of Hiroshima city, in 1991 & 1992 logos is of a wing, the sun and circle of light and lastly the current logo is given a pet title as ‘owl’ Logo which was designed by Rei Yoshimara in the year 1997. And in this present logo the stylish M is to look like stretched wings but instead of M many mistook it as stylized tulips!

Chrysler

This company was founded in the year 1925 and the original Chrysler Logo vanished after 1954 and slowly n steadily Chrysler Automotive Company started producing cars in attractive models and their Logo also got designed in a stylized way. Below are Logos which clearly tells us the vast variations among various years.

Ferrari Logo history

Ferrari Company is known for its sporty look and royalty and this company was founded in the year 1929 by Enzo Ferrari and the symbol of Ferrari is well known to every one it’s the Horse rising which is 2 feet of black shield/yellow rectangle.

This figure also features a famous opinion as a horse badge on the car which will always guide the driver towards the step of Success/victory! Though this cars are quite pricey, it equally has good engine and with good features in it! Below are Logos of this company and there weren’t much variations in the Logo over the years!

Volkswagen:

The founder of this company is Ferdinand Porsche and few sources state that this car company was found in year 1930. This company is basically a German based company and the very first car was designed based on the idea and directives of Adolf Hitler.

He told Porsche to design a car in such a way it carries two adults and three children with top speed of 100 km/h, fuel consumption of 42 mpg. Porsche promised Hitler to deliver design as per his instructions with prototype cars to be built by Daimler-Benz.

Later Hitler added one more secret specification which was running in his mind for long time i.e. it should be designed in such a way that it carries three men, machine gun, and ammunition. Well in middle British came and took over this company and renamed it as Beetle and later on handed over back to the German government in a trust.

Slowly and steadily this company earned higher returns vending 21 million cars and Volkswagen Beetle would become one of the best selling cars. The Volkswagen Logo was specially designed by an employee of Porsche by name Franz Xavier Reimspiess and he was awarded with the payment of 100 Reichsmarks (about $400).

Origin of the car

The birth of the car as we know it today occurred over a period of years. It was only in 1885 that the first real car rolled down on to the streets. The earlier attempts, though successful, were steam powered road-vehicles.

The first self-propelled car was built by Nicolas Cugnot in 1769 which could attain speeds of upto 6 kms/hour. In 1771 he again designed another steam-driven engine which ran so fast that it rammed into a wall, recording the world’s first accident.

In 1807 Francois Isaac de Rivaz designed the first internal combustion engine. This was subsequently used by him to develop the world’s first vehicle to run on such an engine, one that used a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen to generate energy.

This spawned the birth of a number of designs based on the internal combustion engine in the early nineteenth century with little or no degree of commercial success. In 1860 thereafter, Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir built the first successful two-stroke gas driven engine. In 1862 he again built an experimental vehicle driven by his gas-engine, which ran at a speed of 3 kms/hour.

These cars became popular and by 1865 could be frequently espied on the roads.

The next major leap forward occurred in 1885 when the four stroke engine was devised. Gottileb Damlier and Nicolas Otto worked together on the mission till they fell apart. Daimler created his own engines which he used both for cars and for the first four wheel horseless carriage. In the meanwhile, unknown to them, Karl Benz, was in the process of creating his own advanced tri-cycle which proved to be the first true car. This car first saw the light of the day in 1886.

The season of experiments continued across the seas in the United States where Henry Ford began work on a horseless carriage in 1890. He went several steps forward and in 1896, completed his first car, the Quadricycle in 1896. This was an automobile powered by a two cylinder gasoline engine. The Ford Motor Company was launched in 1903 and in 1908 he catapulted his vehicle, Model T Ford to the pinnacle of fame. Continuing with his innovations, he produced this model on a moving assembly line, thus introducing the modern mass production techniques of the automobile industry.

The modern car, therefore comes from a long list of venerated ancestors, and its lineage will, hopefully grow longer as we progress!
